Champ de Cour is a south-east facing site, planted with 50+ year-old vines on granite soils, with pebbles under thick, dense clay. Dried herbs and deft exotic spices on the nose. The palate’s cool raspberry fruit is underscored by dark, rocky minerality, with black pepper and a savoury, sous bois herbaceousness. Substantial, but rendered so elegantly. A third whole bunch vinified in 2019, then aged in 600 litre old oak demi-muids for 15 months.

These vineyards are in Montigny-lès-Arsures and Arbois, dominated by marl soils from three different geographical periods, the Trias, Bajocian and Lias. This is ripe on the nose with stone fruit and exotic fruit. It has the unmistakable nut and dry fruit character. On the palate there is an intense bouquet of sweet spice and ripe apple. We tasted from barrel, while the malolactic fermentation was finishing. The wine was still cloudy, with a high level of sugar still remaining. It was an explosion of white flower aromas. Very promising! The berries are lightly crushed before being pressed and then fermented in barrels and botti. One third of the grapes are left on their skins for one night. The wine is aged half in 500L oak casks and half in stainless steel tanks.

100% Nerello Mascalese. 100 year old vines at 800m altitude, planted upon a lava flow from Etna’s 1947 eruption. A slightly deeper hue of ruby, this has an intriguing nose of crystallised raspberries, roses, grapefruit and a meatiness suggestive of Syrah. The palate is insinuating, almost plush on the entry, before grippy tannins reveal themselves and the firm body grabs you, yet somehow avoids dominating. About as far from formulaic wine as it is possible to be, this is thrillingly uncompromising – analyse it too much and you’ll probably conclude that it shouldn’t work, but somehow it does!

Dame-Jane symbolizes Champagne Giraud’s link to the earth and the origin of wine. Raising a great rosé Champagne in terracotta is not common. The vibration of the fruit on a crystalline purity. An impression of freshness that is almost tactile. Silky tannins enriched by the slow rotation of the lees. More than 50 sandstone amphora are now dedicated to the vinification and ageing of Dame-Jane.

Black cherry and fine smokiness on the nose, with quite beautiful violet perfume. With more time in the glass, the aromas become more red-fruited and open - very 2015, very accessible. Finely textured on the fore-palate, with charming soft, silkily giving blackcurrant fruit, offset by a detailed tannic framework. You feel this gives a glimpse of what the grand vin might achieve in the future. A showstopper!
