This has pliancy and cushioning of fruit, with notes of grapefruit and lychee, offset against precise, zippy acidity. Joyful, this offers excellent value
The Badstube is wonderfully open in style, food-friendly, ripe, yet focused – lovely wine

The Estate Riesling comes mainly from vineyards around Kues, on the left bank of the Mosel. This hits the ground running – and does so while exuding that soft-shelled Mosel loveliness and clipped lemony precision. You can sense the warm 2018 summer here, in the ripe, ample
apricot fruit. Drink this as soon as you get your hands on it. Although it will mellow and meld with bottle age - why wait when it is so good now

The more generous sibling of the Feinherb (below). The only difference is the length of fermentation, which here is halted earlier, making this a touch richer and allowing a lovely low alcohol level of 8% abv. Candied citrus and fresh lime, with wet-stone minerality. Hard to think of a better bottle for a warm summer’s day. Bottled under screwcap.

Later picked grapes in this Spätlese add intensity at all levels and characte. This is balanced by an intricate delicacy of acidic bone structure and mineral tension. A beautifully complete nose, of fine crushed earth minerality, ripe lime, gooseberry and apricot fruit. The palate is powerful from the off, drivingly intense and with an unabashed potency which is really rather exciting.

Lemon and lime rind, with wet-stone minerality, this is a mere 8% abv and was fermented a little longer than usual, resulting in a drier style. Candied tension to the finish. This will keep but it’s so tempting to enjoy it early.

Badstube is a huge vineyard, running north to Graacher
Himmelreich. The Thanisch holdings are all at the
Bernkastel end however. Nervy and tightly packed
when tasted, this has an explosive drive, matched blowfor-blow by its impressive volume of pear fruit, tinned
peach and herbs - wonderfully precise

The Thanisch holdings are at the southern Bernkastel end of the large Badstube vineyard. Flinty mineral aromas with lemon rind, showing the cooler aspect of 2020 on the nose. The palate is soft-shelled and giving, the quince, lemon and apple crumble flavours making for an approachable yet multi-faceted, age-worthy wine. The zesty acidity underscores the energy. 8.5% abv.

The celebrated Doctor vineyard produces wines which are richer than its Kabinett siblings yet with a more pronounced bite of acidic tension and a salty tang on the finish, which works brilliantly with the slaty minerality. The precise finish is rounded out by a lovely fleshy fruit residue coating the palate. Textbook high quality Kabinett, seriously good.

The palate is powerful from the off, drivingly intense and with an unabashed potency which is really rather exciting. This, as Sofia was quick to point out, is balanced by an intricate delicacy of acidic bone structure and mineral tension. Hits all the right notes, stunning.

Honeysuckle and crème brulée aromas lead into a supple, zesty palate of orange, apricot, mango and rich peach fruit, with a wonderful slaty mineral definition. An enveloping wine, which will drink relatively early but has a long life ahead of it. 8% abv.
