Champ de Cour is a south-east facing site, planted with 50+ year-old vines on granite soils, with pebbles under thick, dense clay. Dried herbs and deft exotic spices on the nose. The palate’s cool raspberry fruit is underscored by dark, rocky minerality, with black pepper and a savoury, sous bois herbaceousness. Substantial, but rendered so elegantly. A third whole bunch vinified in 2019, then aged in 600 litre old oak demi-muids for 15 months.

This small parcel, just one hectare of ‘village’ wine, is a monopole. The soil here resembles 1er Cru Champonnets its neighbour, from which it is separated by a narrow road. There is 10% new oak in this, as usual. A wonderfully expressive nose of ripe raspberries and strawberries. If someone has never tasted Gevrey-Chambertin before, give them a glass of this – it will have them hooked for life…
