100% Nerello Mascalese, planted at 550m altitude. Lying on the edge of a lava flow, this tends to have a more rounded, ebullient style. The 2017 offers a seductive combination of savoury, volcanic minerals and pretty, very pure, sweetly-perfumed berry fruit. Floral and elegant, it wears red fruits proudly on its sleeve, focused and delightful. Wonderfully accessible, with hints of spice, this is lovely, through to a long, precise finish.

Stargazer lily, yellow nectarine and orange blossom on the nose. The palate reflects those qualities together with a savory underpinning. The texture is both opulent and elegant, exhibiting the balance of fruit and a quartz-like translucency that only age, and the superb site situated at 1,800 feet can bring to a wine. This wine is extremely well-integrated with a lingering, mouthwatering and round finish.

This is a 3.64ha plot planted in 1930, 1975 and 1988, on a variety of soils at around 500m of altitude. At the highest points, there is clay-limestone over sandstone bedrock and in the deeper, cooler areas, the topsoil covers a layer of silt and clay. Although mainly south-facing, El Carretil is further north and cooler. Dark, flinty aromas, with Parma violets. The palate’s crystalline blackberry fruit is cool and focused, transparent and zinging with nervy mineral energy. A real terroir wine, this has phenomenal precision and drive.
