100% Nerello Mascalese, from vines between 80 to 110 years old, planted on different lava flows and altitudes - complex. Pale, bright ruby in colour, this offers soft, gentle fruit on the nose and palate – vibrant with a characteristic volcanic minerality. This has elements reminiscent of Pinot Noir. More serious than it looks, this will hit the ground running, with food, but has the capacity to age.

100% Cabernet Franc, Magnacosta is a 1.5 hectare gravelly site where an old stream eats (magna) into a hillside (costa). The Cabernet Franc, grown from Pomerol cuttings is,very accessible. The 2018 offers a rather high-toned, focused nose, grape must and wild blackcurrant, layered with bitter cherry on the nose, rather lovely. The palate reflects the aromatics presented on the nose whilst laying some ground rules. This is no retiring violet, rather it is robust, positively vibrant and driven, embellished by floral purity.

On the nose, there is a rather beguiling balance of bright playfulness and brooding sobriety - quite a feat, and very much part of the overall charm. There is abundant fruit here, fresh and upbeat, with hints of spice and dark coffee, complemented by almost citric freshness and an underlying saline seam of minerals. Beautifully balanced, even in its infancy, this will continue to improve. The floral aromatics on the attenuated finish add additional elegance and flair - lovely wine.
