Château Trotanoy

Situated only a few hundred yards to the west of Pétrus, Château Trotanoy is planted on a unique gravel and clay soil, underpinned by the famous Pomerol, iron-rich crasse de fer.

About

The particularity is obvious, even by the feel of the ground underfoot, the crunch of white pebbles, with dark, dank clay underneath. The stones reflect light in summer and act as Nature’s hot water bottles, help protect against frost. The cool clay beneath provides benevolent moisture but it also bakes solid in dry weather – becoming treacherously slippery.

Little wonder that the etymology of ‘Trotanoy’ is ‘Trop ennuie’ – ‘too much’, ‘too difficult’. Fortunately it was deemed worthwhile as Château Trotanoy is indisputably one of Bordeaux finest wines and in recent years has regained its former status as the equivalent of premier cru status - as the vines have gained significant age and, of course been micro-managed by the team at Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix. The wine is seductive, luxuriant, silky and, if somewhat hedonistic, hugely memorable.
