The first vintage of Le Tertre Roteboeuf produced by François Mitjavile was the 1978. The name, Le Tertre Roteboeuf which is loosely translated into “Hill of the belching beef,” pays homage to a time when the property was probably used for cattle to graze during medieval times. Interestingly, the wine does show a character of sauvage meatiness, together with dark berries, cedar and violet aromas. Great pairing with roasted beef!
Besides Tertre Roteboeuf, Francois has another property Roc de Cambes in the Côtes de Bourg, a vineyard reminiscent of Tertre Roteboeuf, being as it is, a natural amphitheatre with a perfect aspect overlooking the Gironde River. And his son Louis started making wine at Tertre Roteboeuf as well, and later purchased a property at Cotes de Castillon in 2006 and named it Domaine de L'Aurage. The terroir is the perfect combination of good limestone and clay terroir soils just across the border from Saint Emilion.
