These vineyards are in Montigny-lès-Arsures and Arbois, dominated by marl soils from three different geographical periods, the Trias, Bajocian and Lias. This is ripe on the nose with stone fruit and exotic fruit. It has the unmistakable nut and dry fruit character. On the palate there is an intense bouquet of sweet spice and ripe apple. We tasted from barrel, while the malolactic fermentation was finishing. The wine was still cloudy, with a high level of sugar still remaining. It was an explosion of white flower aromas. Very promising! The berries are lightly crushed before being pressed and then fermented in barrels and botti. One third of the grapes are left on their skins for one night. The wine is aged half in 500L oak casks and half in stainless steel tanks.

A beautifully complete nose here, of fine crushed earth minerality, ripe lime, gooseberry and apricot fruit. The palate is powerful from the off, drivingly intense and with an unabashed potency which is really rather exciting. This, as Sofia was quick to point out, is balanced by an intricate delicacy of acidic bone structure and mineral tension. Hits all the right notes, stunning.

100% Cabernet Franc, Magnacosta is a 1.5 hectare gravelly site where an old stream eats (magna) into a hillside (costa). The Cabernet Franc, grown from Pomerol cuttings is, in Andrea’s mind, the “lightest of the campi” It certainly tends to be the most accessible. The 2018 offers a rather high-toned, focused nose, grape must and wild blackcurrant, layered with bitter cherry on the nose, rather lovely. The palate reflects the aromatics presented on the nose whilst laying some ground rules. This is no retiring violet, rather it is robust, positively vibrant and driven, embellished by floral purity.

The domaine’s village Puligny-Montrachet is an absolute classic, and a flagship of the estate. It is made from four hectares of vines, spread over seven lieux-dits: Derrière la Velle, Reuchaux, Corvee, Aubues, Tremblots, Les Noyer Bret and Les Rousselles. The eighth plot, Levrons, is being replanted. Suave and finely textured, with that frisson of chalky Puligny terroir.
