Domaine Labruyère-Prieur En Primeur 2023
Domaine Labruyère is the oldest estate in Moulin-à-Vent, Beaujolais. Dating back to 1850, the original ten hectares have been added to over the years. The most significant acquisition was of Le Clos du Moulin-à-Vent, the appellation’s only monopole, situated beside the iconic windmill. Since 2008, the property has been run by Édouard Labruyère (pictured above), the seventh generation. Édouard grew up at the domaine and now works alongside winemaker Nadine Gublin and cellar master Michel Rovère. Five wines make up the core of the range: Bourgogne Gamay, Coeur de Terroirs, Champ de Cour, Le Carquelin and Le Clos du Moulin-à-Vent. Corney & Barrow is the exclusive UK agent.
WINES ON OFFER
MOULIN-À-VENT COEUR DE TERROIRS
Coeur de Terroirs comes from four parcels in Moulin-à-Vent, planted with 10-25-year-old vines. As such, it provides an overview of the appellation and its granite soils. This offers bright, juicy red berry fruit with crunch and precision. Very approachable — a wine that will drink upon arrival. It will be bottled in April 2025. All destemmed, with maturation in old 600-litre demi-muids.

MOULIN-À-VENT CHAMP DE COUR
Champ de Couris a 1.4-hectare southeast-facing site, planted with 50+ year-old vines. The soil contains pebbles over thick, dense clay and granite. Dark and peppery aromas leading into a palate of juicy plum and red cherry fruit. The 30% whole bunch fermentation comes through in vivacious freshness and pretty spices. 90% of the wine was aged in 600-litre old oak demi-muids, the remaining 10% in used Burgundy barrels, for 18 months.

MOULIN-À-VENT LE CARQUELIN
Le Carquelin is a 1.75-hectare south-facing slope, with 50-year-old vines planted on friable granite. As winemaker Nadine Gublin says, this is “the heart of the best granite soils of Moulin-à-Vent”. A dark, spicy, minerally nose. The palate is sleek and energetic, the liquorice and bright, bitter cherry fruit make for a dark wine which is open and accessible. “A noble wine,” in Edouard Labruyère’s words. 100% destemmed, following which 50% is aged in oak barrels and 50% in 600L demi-muids. Outstanding value.

LE CLOS DU MOULIN-À-VENT, MONOPOLE
The domaine is never able to satisfy the demand for this wine, although they are very good to C&B. Le Clos, beside the iconic windmill, is the only monopole in Moulin-à-Vent. It is a 0.92-hectare south-facing walled vineyard, planted with 70+ year-old untrellised vines. Arid soils of sand and rock sit above hard granite. Bitter cherry aromas with creamy density. The palate is fresh and precise on the entry, opening onto a cool, focussed mid-palate of delicate spices and wild strawberries. The finish is salty and fine. 100% destemmed, with ageing in 228L oak barrels. 10-15% new oak.
