THE DOMAINE

The new generation from an impressive lineage of Chablis winemakers, Vincent Dampt is a rising star of the region

Domaine Vincent Dampt 2022 En Primeur

Vincent Dampt is the scion of two great winemaking names, Dampt and Defaix, so it is hardly surprising that he would choose wine as his métier - or perhaps it chose him!

Vincent enrolled himself in wine school in Beaune aged just 14, then worked in Puligny-Montrachet (with Olivier Leflaive) before heading further afield to Marlborough, New Zealand – an experience he calls ‘mind-expanding’.

Vincent later returned to Chablis, to the family estate in the village of Milly, to work under the expert tutelage of his father Daniel.

In 2003, Vincent inherited a few small vineyard parcels, also in Milly, and was able to create his own domaine, adding a few further plots over the years.

Vincent and his wife Emilie now manage ten hectares of vines, including those in the premiers crus of Côte de Léchet, Les Lys and Vaillons: prized sites on pure Kimmeridgian soils – calcareous clays with limestone and marine fossils - which give Chablis their hallmark minerality.

Corney & Barrow is the exclusive agent in the U.K., Hong Kong and Singapore.

THE 2022 Vintage

The 2022 vintage has much to offer Chablis lovers.

There is delight for purists, in wines that combine elegance of fruit, a sense of freshness and mineral salinity; yet there is also an appealing generosity of fruit from this ‘année solaire’. But success was not a given. Achieving that peculiarly chablisien tension of ripeness and acidity, requires skill and sensitivity, mastery of timing and terroir; and in 2022, the growing season was far from straightforward.

The post-frost rebound set the scene. As so often happens in the year after a frost-stricken vintage, the vines set off at a sprint, apparently hellbent on pushing out leaves, compensating for the year before, in a bid for survival. So, it is unsurprising that we find an energetic, expressive character in this vintage, particularly given the warm, sunny growing conditions.

But ‘sun + heat’ is not an automatic equation for ambrosia, and the lack of rain compounded the effects of both (in fact, Chablis saw even less rainfall in 2022 than the parched Côte d’Or). While ripeness was almost a ‘given’, and the absence of disease a further relief after the previous year’s scourge, this dry, sunlit year required growers to be particularly vigilant to harvest date; preserving freshness became the all-important factor. Chardonnay is no fan of the heat, fattens quickly, drops acid.  In these conditions, the approach to harvest is even more fraught - a tightrope walk of coaxing fruit to ripeness without compromising that vital seam of acidity that gives the wines their aliveness.

As always, it pays to know your grower. Fortunately, we are working with Vincent Dampt, who has been living all this since childhood, and has a keen awareness of the impact of climate change on style.

THE WINES

    .

    CHABLIS 1er CRU LES LYS

Sitting discreetly atop the hill of Vaillons, the small parcel of Les Lys is held to have belonged to French royalty, hence the name. While its wines can be officially designated as Vaillons, several growers including Vincent Dampt produce its wines as a standalone premier cru with distinctive qualities. Les Lys has many plus-points: for one, its fine Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils, typically yielding wines with a ‘classic’ Chablis profile. The site is also north-east facing, therefore cooler - a notable feature in this warmer vintage, and in which the wines seem to come into their own. The 2022 is immediately enticing: first, the sensuous scent of jasmine and wisteria, then a whiff of iodine, a firm reminder of origin. Fine-boned, linear, the wine is beautifully structured, its poached pear fruit and light creamy texture underpinned by a seam of chalky acids. As cool and fine as silk on steel. Cleansing finish.

    CHABLIS 1er CRU VAILLONS

Vincent’s holdings in Vaillons total 0.6 hectares. Above the classic Kimmeridgian seam lies a substantial layer of cool, moisture-retentive clay, a godsend in this warmer vintage. Vincent’s Vaillons blends fruit from the warmer, more sun-exposed part of the parcel, in Beugnons, with the fruit of cooler, higher-acid fruit in Chatains, next to Les Lys. The wine seems to capture the spirit of both in its sense of rich, golden fruit and refreshing minerality. An intense Vaillons, the 2022 is perfumed with white flowers, hinting at the exotic. The palate layers orchard/stone fruit and crème pâtissiere, expansive and ripe, its mineral length unfurling in the glass.

CHABLIS 1er CRU CÔTE DE LÉCHET

Vincent’s fantastic vineyard parcels are found high up on the Côte de Léchet, the 38% gradient and poor, stony soils yielding wines with a characteristic, mineral signature. Vincent has two different parcels, one of which dates back to 1974, the other new to production following extensive renovations. Vincent has replanted at a higher density (8000 vs 5,550 vines/hectare) and adopted ‘guyot simple’ pruning, giving fewer grapes per vine but aiming for higher quality and concentration. The resulting 2022 is exceptional, showing all the class and potential of its site. Immediately compelling on the nose with its signature tang of ‘wet stone’ and white flowers, the wine is both expansive and precise on the palate, with ripe, savoury fruit wrapped sleekly around a steely core. Rich, dynamic and incisive, an exercise in focus.

    Domaine du Couvent

    Burgundy En Primeur 2023

We taste with father and son team Philippe and Paul Chéron in their cavernous, deep cellars under central Nuits-Saint-Georges. They make a sensitive, elegant style of Pinot Noir (and one white). Domaine du Couvent was formed by the union of Domaine des Varoilles and Domaine Misset-Chéron.

The wines of Domaine des Varoilles, which now form part of the Couvent range, will be familiar to longstanding C&B customers. Domaine Misset-Chéron was established in the late 1930s by Phillippe’s grandfather, Paul Misset, when he acquired a plot of Clos de Vougeot. Domaine des Varoilles was bought in 1964 by the Chéron family in conjunction with the Naigeon family, vignerons from Gevrey-Chambertin.

    WINES ON OFFER

    MARSANNAY BLANC LES LONGEROIES

This comes from a 0.35-hectare parcel. 2021 was the first vintage. This is a similar terroir to Marsannay’s Clos du Roy, according to Philippe. East-facing vinesin long rows (250m), with a slight slope that becomes steeper towards the top of the parcel. The soils are a combination of rolled pebbles, silt and Bresse marls. This was the first to be picked in 2023. The palate is creamy, lactic and rich, with a phenolic bite delineating the stone fruit flavours. Fermented in 80% stainless steel and 20% oak barrels for 15 months with no lees stirring. The wine is lightly fined before bottling.

BOURGOGNE CÔTE D’OR PINOT NOIR LES JUMELLES

This wine’s humble Bourgogne appellation belies the complexity here. It comes from two small plots in Gevrey-Chambertin Grands Champs and Prunier totalling 0.32 hectares. Clay-rich soils make for naturally productive vines (“you have to be careful with the yields,” says Philippe). Dark and peppery, with great substance, framed by firm tannins, which will meld. Seven barrels were made in 2023. 100% whole bunch fermentation.

    MARSANNAY CLOS DU ROY

Just 0.43 hectares here, in this admired Marsannay lieu-dit in the north of the appellation, which is 30ha in total. 2023 is the third vintage. The fruit comes from two plots: a lower elevation, flatter parcel rich in marls and a steep, higher elevation site on sandy-clayey screes. Fleshy red berry fruit, pliant and inviting, with morello cherry and foresty spices. 100% destemmed. Eight barrels were made in 2023.

    GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN CLOS DU COUVENT MONOPOLE

From a 0.4-hectare plot within the garden of the ex-Varoilles domaine buildings in Gevrey-Chambertin and surrounded by a stone wall. As Philippe says, there is a natural ripeness to this plot, requiring a hands-off approachprobably because the wall creates a micro-climate. He describes drawing out the elegance of the old vines and “looking to make something approachable young here.A succulent, darkly berried wine, lifted by fresh acidity, 2023 having seen an unusually low pH here. 100% destemmed. Seven barrels were made.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN CLOS MEIX DES OUCHES MONOPOLE

This one-hectare vineyard is a monopole, owned in its entirety by the domaine. It has similar stony soils to the adjacent 1er Cru Champonnets. Half of the vines here are over 60 years old, whilst the rest are around half that, planted in the 1990s. The clay-limestone soils are relatively deep, interspersed with gravels. Philippe described this as a joyous site and wine”. Crystalline red berry fruit aromas. The palate is rich and impressive with deep raspberry fruit and seated acidity. Cropped at 48hl/ha in 2023. 40% whole bunch fermentation

    CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY LES QUARANTES OUVREES

Named after the size of the plots used in this cuvée 40 ouvrées or 1.77 hectares, an ouvrée being an old French term for the area of land a vigneron could work in one day. This wine comes from the historic Paul Misset estate, from 12 plots covering nine climats within the village of Chambolle-Musigny. M.Misset (Philippe’s grandfather) pieced these holdings together from various growers. Most of the vines are over 40 years old. Intense red berry fruit aromas. The palate is creamy and flavour-saturated, opening onto an airily perfumed mid-palate of rose petals. 100% destemmed. 20 barrels in 2023. Lovely wine.

    CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY CLOS DE L’ORME

This is from a plot of eight ouvrées (0.36 hectares) within the larger climat of Clos del’Orme and bordering the premier cru sites Les Charmes, Aux Combottes and Aux Échanges. A gentle stony slope aids drainage. The vines were re-planted at various stages, from the 1940s to 1997 (mostly 1950s). Cool, focussed raspberry fruit with just the right level of exotic spice. More structured than Les Quarantes Ouvrées, with greater ageing potential. 50% whole bunch vinification, which is the maximum at the domaine

Philippe and Paul have two plots, covering 0.75 hectares, in the lieu-dit Les Barreaux, which sits above Richebourg, Cros Parantoux, Aux Brûlées and Les Petits Monts, high on the slope. The vines are planted over a thin calcareous top soil with over 60% limestone. Part of the vineyard is cooler, facing north, while the remainder faces east. Stricter than Clos de l'Orme, not giving away as much, but with a fabulous nervy palate, which is framed by filigree, fruit-coated tannins. 100% destemmed.

    GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 1ER CRU CHAMPONNET

This is an even stonier site than neighbouring Clos du Meix des Ouches. There are two parcels here, one from the ex-Varoilles estate (planted in the ‘60s) and one from the historic Misset holdings (planted in the ‘90s), totalling over a hectare, making Couvent the biggest producer in Champonnet. This is an extension of Ruchottes-Chambertin, situated just before the cool breezes of the Combe de Lavaux. The soils are complex, with varying topography. The vines are between 30 and 60 years old. Bright, intensely red-berried, with plushly fruit-coated tannins. Primary and open.

This site runs from the southern side of Chambolle-Musigny to the premiers crus Charmes, Les Grands Murs and Chatelots. The name Feusselotte is derived from the word ‘Feusse’, or ‘hollow, as seen in the vineyard’s topography. The soils are shallow, composed of Comblanchien limestone and marl. Gently creamy red berry aromas with dark spices. The palate is excitingly flavour-soaked, ripe red berries and roses, with nervy chalky limestone tension. 100% destemmed. Nine barrels were made in 2023.

This is the domaine’s smallest plot, at 0.24 hectares. Philippe explained that the elegance of this cuvée is due to its location between Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St-Georges. Domaine du Couvent’s plot is mid-slope, planted with very old vines. Along with Clos Vougeot, these are the oldest vines of the estate. The most pronounced whole bunch spices with dark berries and a fabulous sappy tension to the palate. The berries here are so tiny, you would crush them if you tried to destem them. Although this is the highest pH of the estate, the sensation is fresh. Grippy tannins. Five barrels were made in 2023, a record.100% whole-bunch fermentation. 14% abv.

Gevrey-Chambertin’s La Romanée is a premier cru high on the slope, beside the cooling breezes of the Combe Lavaux. The domaine has one hectare of vines here, with an average age of over 60 years. Half of the plot was originally planted to Chardonnay, before being replaced with Pinot Noir in the ‘60s. Very shallow soils (just 50cm) lie over a gravel and limestone bedrock, making for a naturally low-yielding site. Darker fruited, with a tangerine rind zestiness and orange blossom. The palate is framed by super-fine, almost Chambolle-like tannins not a text book Gevrey, but no less fascinating for that. 18 barrels were made in 2023. This was Paul Cheron’s favourite.

The smallest plot is in the lower part of the Clos (0.7ha, always destemmed) whilst the second, and largest (1.4ha), is close to Vosne-Romanée, near the holding of Liger-Belair. Philippe and Paul vinify three cuvées with a view to possibly releasing them separately one day. 2023 is made of just the top part. Ripe raspberry aromas. The palate is dense and gently creamy, with that Vougeot weight, framed by plushly fruit-coated tannins.

Domaine du Couvent has 0.38 hectares, situated on the calcareous soils of the upper part of Mazoyères-Chambertin. This was planted in the 50s and 70s.
